Snow Day - We will deliver Friday shares on Saturday

Posted on by Justine Mentink

Looks like the roads are still too bad to make deliveries this afternoon. The main roads seem ok, but the roads around the farm still aren't plowed.

We will plan to deliver your shares tomorrow, February 11th. If you will not be able to make it let us know and we will sort out an alternative for you.

Home Deliveries - in the afternoon

AV storage -  4:25 - 5:15 PM

Kingston - 4:35 - 5:10 PM

Stay safe! it's really quite beautiful out, just not for driving!

Take care,

Justine

Sunday Soup

Posted on by Justine Mentink

This weekend it was 11 am and we needed lunch, plus leftovers for lunch for some of the week. Soup is always a hit with my family so I got what was on hand and started. This simple soup lends itself to many different vegetables. I like it with mushrooms added at the end but we didn't have any this time.

Quick vegetable lentil soup:

I started by chopping up a few leeks and an onion.

That went into a large pot with a few glugs of olive oil and a little butter.

While that was cooking I got the veggies prepped.

I peeled the carrots and turnip then cubed them. I trimmed the brussels sprouts, halved them, then sliced them thinly.

Once the leeks and onions were cooked down, I added the vegetables, as well as one and a half quarts of canned tomatoes (I happen to have TapRoot tomatoes I canned in the summer), and about a quart stock (veggie, chicken, or beef). I also added one of my favorite fast cooking legumes, red lentils.

I find red lentils lend such a nice consistency (and protein) to soup, they break down a bit, but still hold some shape. Plus they cook in 20 or so minutes.

I added some salt and pepper, frozen kale and basil from the freezer, and let it simmer for 20 or so minutes.

We ate the soup with some grated parmesan cheese and miso mixed in at the end.

Gilbert, half asleep from his nap, ate two bowls full.

 Happy Soup Eating!

Make up Tuesday Delivery update

Posted on by Patricia Bishop

Good evening all,

All Tuesday deliveries will arrive tomorrow, Wednesday January 25th. Same time and same location. IF you absolutely can not accommodate this change up, please email Justine at csa@taprootfarms.ca and let her know which other location works for you this week OR if you'd like it to come next week. We are delivering the regular Wednesday delivery tomorrow too, so please let us know as soon as possible your preference if you can not make it. We realize this is annoying but better to be safe we think.

I am not sure how the weather has turned out in the city, but here Frank was skating in the farm driveway.

Have a nice evening,

Patricia

CSA Planning 2017

Posted on by Patricia Bishop

Happy 2017 from all of us here at TapRoot Farms!

Josh and I (Patricia) are in the throws of planning for the growing season ahead. We have created a tentative plan for what would go into the shares each week. This is to ensure we create a production schedule that has veggies available when we plan to have them available. We haven't shared this before because we don't want you to hold us to it in that it is a plan and it will depend on how storage crops hold up or how early or late the season is or if we do or do not have a big wind storm, etc. etc. We are trusting you will appreciate this. We'd love your feedback on what you'd like to see more of or less of based on what we have outlined here.

Chickens are raised from May - October. This is because they are pastured (free range). It is too cold the rest of the year to raise them. The chicken inventory will run out later on before we have new chickens in June. We have tried hard to work it out so it will last as long as possible.

Enjoy reviewing and welcome to a new year of food from the farm.
